What is Mos.ID

The Mos.ID authorization system is a major part of the Moscow digital infrastructure, which is currently used by more than 15 million people. Mos.ID is used to authorize on the official Moscow websites and in the mobile applications. Thanks to a single account, the users don’t need to remember and type in their login and password to access each Moscow web service.

Task and requirements

With Mos.ID, the users log in to more than 100 websites and mobile applications. The system is used by more than 15 million users, while the number of logins per day exceeds 1 million. As a result, the system has to deal with high loads, at times reaching critical levels. At the same time, it has to guarantee 99.99% availability.

The key objective of the system was to work reliably and allow each user access to the city services at any time. To make that possible, it was decided to upgrade Mos.ID to a more up-to-date technical solution which would be able to maintain the stability and security of the city authorization system even under increasing load.

The solution had to be a product developed by a Russian company with fast technical support, implemented business cases, and proven fault tolerance.

The final choice was a solution that offered:

  • Proven fault tolerance and confirmed business cases
  • Fast scaling of Mos.ID at peak loads
  • Quick technical support
  • Increased data security

Tarantool was chosen as the product that met all the specified requirements.

The solution provides efficient processing of data arrays, even for the infrastructure that uses dozens of unrelated systems with different architectures. Tarantool also offers fast technical support and the ability to quickly resolve emerging issues by engaging the vendor’s architects and engineers for this purpose.

Why Tarantool

With the Tarantool-based solution, the Mos.ID infrastructure can withstand high loads on services and scale quickly. Since the most requested data is stored in RAM, the city services connected to the Mos.ID authorization system instantly gain access to the required information and are capable of withstanding more than 10,000 requests per second.

Tarantool fully resolved all the Mos.ID issues and also accelerated data writing by 15%. The new architecture makes it possible to quickly and flexibly react to infrastructure changes. When a change occurs, horizontal scaling takes less than 30 minutes with no loss of performance while the system rebalances. Another upside is that the time it takes to deploy new clusters has been reduced by 1 hour.
